I recently enjoyed Alex Hickey’s CD launch in the local community hall. She is so creative and enthusiastic—a great combination—plus her wordsmithing is remarkable.

But there were other gifts that night!

I sat behind a three-month-old child who put on his own show. Whenever he lay on his mom’s shoulder, looking back, his eye contact was show-stealing. I began to move my hands close to his keeping time with the music. He joined in with his hands gleefully engaging in the activity. His eyes shone with spirit as sound, sight, and movement joined the dance. Children experience deeply when a number of senses are combined in an experience. It was a gift to watch and interact with him.

But there was yet another gift: As I watched his parents interact with him and each other it was evident they were still in the blissful state of a beautiful birth. Smiles were deep and compassionate, hearts were warmed—not only theirs. They reminded all around them how remarkable and precious it is to bring a child into the world.
