Mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to what is going on around you and within you in the present moment. Focusing in such a way––even for parts of a day––can reveal many subtle hidden treasures of everyday life.
Tiny children cannot tell us how they feel and what they think, but actually they do show us in their actions.
When we are fully present (in a mindful state) we can notice clues about how they think, what they feel and what they might need.
Such information then allows us to respond with wisdom and foresight as we interact with them.
This in turn allows them to learn that the world is a safe place and that their needs will be met.
This then allows them to relax and notice more about the world around them and learn more about that world. The cycle of benefits rewards us and our children over and over again.
Consciously choosing to parent mindfully will hug you both throughout your life together.
Next time I'll share a few suggestions about how to practice mindfulness and hone your abilities.
