Garden Gifts
When I walk to the
garden in preparation for the evening meal, I never know what I will find. Sometimes
the peas which were simply a promise the day before are waiting in abundance. I
might remember to check and see if the carrots are ready to thin and discover
them waiting for me to make some room in the patch. The onions I thinned last
week may need more harvesting. Budding sweet peas which danced with
hummingbirds yesterday may be ready to perfume the house. I have loved to pick
things since I was a child. With my hands busy, my thoughts can explore and
dream. It is one of the most rejuvenating times of my day. Growing food simply feels
right. Even growing a small amount is an excellent way to help young
children understand two important things: where food comes from, and the joy of
eating food as fresh and healthy as any in the world.
